The Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety is designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge required to contribute to safe work practices and support the implementation of WHS systems within the workplace. This nationally recognised qualification is ideal for individuals who take on WHS responsibilities in addition to their main duties or who aspire to formal WHS roles.

NB: While there are no prerequisites for this course, good language and literacy skills, as well as strong computer skills are needed to complete the course in the required timeframe. You will be required to complete an electronic survey prior to the course detailing your work health and safety experience, and how you learn and react in accelerated learning environments. The link to this survey will be supplied in your booking confirmation email. In addition, you will be enrolled in and required to undertake an online Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy assessment via our online learning platform.

This qualification is suited to supervisors, safety officers, team leaders, or workers with a strong interest in promoting safe work environments. Upon completion, graduates will have the foundation needed to pursue further studies in WHS or take on more specialised safety responsibilities within their organisation.

Course Outline

During this course your trainer will cover the key areas of work undertaken by an Work Health and Safety Officer or Advisor. A mixed course delivery of written and practical sessions is implemented to ensure students obtain a complete qualification readying them for their role within an organisation. Participants will learn to:

  • Participate in a compliance assessment of work processes
  • Planning for and undertake consultation
  • Contribute to developing and implementing a WHSMS
  • Consult with others about risk management
  • Complete risk assessment tools
  • Communicate outcomes of risk assessment
  • Monitor and review control measures
  • Initial incident response
  • Plan incident investigation
  • Collect evidence and develop a timeline of events
  • Identify the root cause and contributing factors
  • Report on investigation outcomes and implement recommendations
  • Investigate and report on the sustainability of work practices
  • Assess and evaluate implemented practices
  • Report outcomes

Additional Requirements for Distance Students

  • A total of two volunteers to complete practical assessment tasks:
    • Must be at least 15 years of age
    • Must consent to being recorded and have their image shared with a Pinnacle Safety and Training assessor for assessment purposes
